His 12 etudes are challenging to the modern trumpeter, and were considered standard study material at the RAM. He was also professor of trumpet at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1894 to 1938. In 1904 he became a founding member of the London Symphony Orchestra, and soon after became the country's leading proponent of the B-flat trumpet over the older alto trumpet in F. John Jacob Solomon (1856-1953) was one of England's finest trumpet performers during his time.
